Excellent work. I will say getting cut definitely hits a lot harder when you have responsibilities you're neglecting to play.
At first it's a fun little romp, but the more you see that message the more things change. Not just the levels, but you too. You get impatient, try to move faster, only to make more mistakes. But the clock is ticking, and this is where you will bleed. Soon things start blending together, what made the levels distinct before is now just another part of the game, and as the enemies are replaced with hourglasses and the familiar skulls from the tower you can only become more aware of how much you've bleed. Eventually things devolve entirely, as if you've finally outrun the treadmill but now the once vibrant levels are dull and grey. There's nothing for you to see here anymore, only the ticking of the clock persists. This spreads to the game as a whole until you're left with nothing at all. Nothing but yourself and the blood you've spilt along the way.
Does it speak to the consumability of games? How we can never truly see those vibrant and beautiful worlds as we did the first time we played through them? Perhaps more so to our willingness to sink what little time we have into them, procedural, randomly generated games allowing for infinite play, infinite fun, infinite cuts. It's difficult to say. Make no mistake my friends, this is indeed a horror game. One much more terrifying than you can ever imagine.
Great job on the aesthetics. I grew up on Atari 2600 and 7800 games and this really captures not only the look and feel but also sound of those systems.
Hey Terry! I first played VVVVVV when I was 11 or so, and you've been a big inspiration ever since! Making games solo is a long tedious process, but you were one of the first people that made me say "Wow, maybe I could do this."
This game is tough for me. The sense of unfolding and discovery is great, but I did find myself just a little wanting for a more decisive conclusion.
Enjoyed this one, glad you're feeling better, looking forward to your future stuff. ( :
I gotta write again to say ya know, this game could be a full fledged release if it had more levels and was expanded a bit. It really is the exact kind of game I love, extremely fast and dead on controls, retro style Atari 2600, great playability and very easy to just pick up and play and get into. It's a shame that there isn't more however, I would gladly purchase a more full version. 8)
I'm gonna keep sayin' it... I got a new job that pays great but is very stressful and this game is perfect to come unwind to! If you made a sequel or made it larger and more epic it's something I would gladly pay full price for. It's that good. Already paid for this version even though it's free, just wanted to show my appreciation. The SPEED and CONTROLS are DEAD ON. The aesthetics and sound? PERFECT. I just keep feeling sad that it may not ever be anything more and that you might not know what a gem you have. 8) I feel the same about the game "Bobo Robot" which I loved but it's like it's just 1 level of something that should be an entire game! You got my money man if you ever wanna enhance it or make a sequel! Like maybe make it HUGE so you have to save games and take lots of hours to complete? Just do everything you're doing but bigger and better? Weapons maybe? hehhe I love even that it has swimming sections!
